About
"How do you make these?”
That's the question I get most. The answer is simpler than you'd think: 15 minutes, ink, snap a pic, airdrop to laptop, vectorize, add custom halftone, and bam!
Every day for the past 6 years.
I've been drawing these faces since 2003. They've lived on walls, in sketchbooks, on blockchain, and now here.
DEWDs isn't a side project. It's a calling.
The practice
I'm Derrick. I grew up in Phoenix, drawing since I could hold a pen.
For 20+ years, I've been designing brand identities. I lead a team of incredible creatives at Showit. But DEWDs are different.
In 2019, my family and I moved to Mexico. I got rid of all my art supplies, except for a sketchbook and some ink pens.
That's when the daily practice really started.
15 minutes. Ink only. No erasing. What shows up, stays.
I've tried longer sessions. I've tried starting with pencil. But it always distracts me from the point: showing up and letting something exist.
Since then, I've drawn thousands of these. Every single day. Some for friends. Some for family. Some for rock legends and well-known figures you'd recognize. Most for nobody in particular—just whatever face needs to exist that day.
What they are
Some DEWDs represent actual people. Most are made up. All of them are personal.
The crooked lines, the weird expressions, the tired eyes—each one is a combination of meaning between me and whoever receives it. Sometimes it's memetic. Sometimes it's silly. Always it's intentional.
People ask, "Can you draw _____?"
The answer is yes. But it won't be perfect. It'll be quick, likely with ink, and whatever shows up. That's the deal.
Beyond the Ink
I'm a fine artist and a brand designer. A husband and a father. A creator and a collector.
I love painting and drawing. I make personal cards and notes for family and friends—small gestures to show I care.
I've minted collections on Ethereum. I create and collect tokenized art. I believe in the weird intersection of art, technology, and community.
But what drives me most? Inspiring people in their own journey. Helping them see that their crooked lines aren't mistakes either.
The Collections
I've drawn thousands of DEWDs. Currently working on new collections. Some become prints.
Some become NFTs. Some stay in sketchbooks. Some get commissioned for people who want their own.
Every week, new ones drop. The practice continues. This is a life calling, not a side hustle.
What People Get Wrong
No, they're not AI-generated. Every single one is hand-drawn.
Yes, I'm a trained artist (graphic arts). 20+ years designing, but a lifetime drawing.
No, this isn't just for fun. This is my work, my practice, my calling.
Some DEWDs represent real people. Most don't. All of them mean something.
